The Gravedigger's Daughter - Joyce Carol Oates

I have just ended to read this book, which I liked a lot. Gravedigger's Daughter of Joyce Carol Oates . (En français La fille du fossoyeur) It 's the first time that I read a book of Joyce Carol Oates.

Author Bio
Birth—June 16, 1938
Where—Lockport, New York, USA
Education—B.A., Syracuse Univ.; M.A., Univ. of Wisconsin
Awards—National Book Award for Them, 1970; 14 O. Henry Awards; six Pushcart Prizes
Currently—lives in Princeton, New Jersey

Joyce Carol Oates is one of the most influential and important storytellers in the literary world. She has often used her supreme narrative skills to examine the dark side of middle-class Americana, and her oeuvre includes some of the finest examples of modern essays, plays, criticism, and fiction from a vast array of genres. She is still publishing with a speed and consistency of quality nearly unheard of in contemporary literature.

In 1936 the Schwarts, an immigrant family desperate to escape Nazi Germany, settle in a small town in upstate New York, where the father, a former high school teacher, is demeaned by the only job he can get: gravedigger and cemetery caretaker. After local prejudice and the family's own emotional frailty result in unspeakable tragedy, the gravedigger's daughter, Rebecca, begins her astonishing pilgrimage into America, an odyssey of erotic risk and imaginative daring, ingenious self-invention, and, in the end, a bittersweet—but very "American"—triumph. "You are born here, they will not hurt you"—so the gravedigger has predicted for his daughter, which will turn out to be true.

In The Gravedigger's Daughter, Oates has created a masterpiece of domestic yet mythic realism, at once emotionally engaging and intellectually provocative: an intimately observed testimony to the resilience of the individual to set beside such predecessors as The Falls, Blonde, and We Were the Mulvaneys.

Excerpt

You saw him at a distance: the gravedigger Schwart.

Like a troll he appeared. Somewhat hunched, head lowered.

In the cemetery amid the gravestones. Grimacing to himself as he wielded a scythe, a sickle, a rake; as he pushed the rusted hand-mower in fierce and unvarying swaths through the dense crabgrass; as he dug out a grave, and carted away excess soil in a tipsy wheelbarrow; as he paused to wipe his forehead, and to drink from a jar he carried in his coverall pocket. Tipping back his head, eyes shut and gulping like a thirsty dog.

Schoolboys sometimes squatted behind the cemetery wall that was about three feet in height, made of crude rocks and chunks of mortar, in poor repair. Briars, poison ivy and summac grew wild along the wall. At the front entrance of the cemetery there was a wrought iron gate that could be dragged shut only with difficulty, and an eroded gravel drive, and the caretaker's stone cottage; beyond these, there were several sheds and outbuildings. The oldest gravestones ran up practically to the rear of the cottage. To the grassy area where the caretaker's wife hung laundry on clotheslines stretching between two weathered posts. If the schoolboys couldn't get close enough to Mr. Schwart to taunt him, or to toss chestnuts or stones at him, they sometimes settled for Mrs. Schwart, who would give a sharp little cry of alarm, hurt, pain, terror, drop what she was doing in the grass, and run panicked into the rear of hovel-house in a way that was very funny.

It would be pointed out that harassment of the cemetery caretaker predated Jacob Schwart's arrival. His predecessor had been similarly taunted, and his predecessor's predecessor. In Milburn, as in other country towns in that era, harassment of gravediggers and acts of vandalism in cemeteries were not uncommon.

Some of the schoolboys who harassed Jacob Schwart were as young as ten, eleven years old. In time, others would be older. And some weren't schoolboys any longer, but young men in their twenties. Not immediately, in the 1930s, but in later years. Their shouts wayward and capricious and seemingly brainless as the raucous cries of crows in the tall oaks at the rear of the cemetery.

Gravedigger! Kraut! Nazi! Jew!

Sunday at home

Sunday quiet at home. I made of the sorting in my clothes today. Before my future moving! But my house isnt still sold. It 's the crisis in Europe at present. People are afraid of buying in the real estate. Banks don't lend any more. Well I hope that this situation isn't going to last for such a long time. I would like to settle this sale to be more free and to be able to go on a journey. Actually I must to remain available for potential buyers! Here are some day photos of me with some of my dresses that I like very much!

Theater: Johnny Hallyday plays Tennesse William

I have just to see at the Theater Edouard VII in Paris, Johnny Hallyday the most famous French rocker, to play Tennesse William, Kingdom Of Earth. Johnny Hallyday on the stage for Theater for the first time!

I liked a lot this direction, with exceptional actors. But what most moved me, it 's the simplicity, the modesty with which, Johnny Hallyday (or I should say Jeans-Philippe Smet) occurs on this stage of the theater Edouard VII. This man performed several times in Stade de France, released 47 albums in 50 years of career, obtained 40 golden records, 22 of the platinum, 3 of the diamond and 8 Victoire de la Musique and remained so humble and so himself. I like this man who could give lessons to a lot of people. This man is a myth!
It 's until November 19th! Let's go, it is really brilliant! To reserve : Click here
Johnny Hallyday had already sung a song which speaks about Tennesse William. Beautiful song!

I like very much this song and I like very much the emotion which give off from Johnny Hallyday when he sings this song. His voice is really magnificent! An exceptional singer!

Another song that I like very much. Que je t'aime (As I love you) . I like the way Johnny H. interprets this song! With so emotion! I also like the loyalty of the fans of Johnny for all these years. They are there!

And my favorite song of Johnny! Why?

Oh Marie if you knew
All the pain which people make me
Oh Marie if I could
In your naked arms rest me
......
Tomorrow it will be the great day
It will be necessary to show bravery
Rise to the front, in the front line
Oh Marie I ask you give me a sign
....
Oh Marie if you knew
All the pain which people made me
Oh Marie I 'll wait
That in the sky you come to find me
Oh Marie I ll wait
That in the sky you come to find me

My song of the day : Restless Heart Syndrome

I listen this song at the moment! I don't want to explain why. It is just as this! (But I 'm not sick)

I've got a really bad disease
It's got me begging on my hands and knees
Take me to the emergency
'Cause something seems to be missing
Somebody take the pain away
It's like an ulcer bleeding in my brain
Send me to the pharmacy
So I can lose my memory

I'm elated
Medicated
Lord knows I tried to find a way to run away

I think they found another cure
For broken hearts and feeling insecure
You'd be surprised what I endure
What makes you feel so self-assured

I need to find a place to hide
You never know what could be waiting outside
The accidents that you could find
It's like some kind of suicide

So what ails you is what impales you
I feel like I've been crucified to be satisfied

I'm a victim of my symptom
I am my own worst enemy
You're a victim of your symptom
You are your own worst enemy
Know your enemy

I'm elated
Medicated
I am my own worst enemy
So what ails you is what impales you
You are your own worst enemy
You're a victim of your symptom
You are your own worst enemy
You're a victim of the system

PINK FLOYD - The refuge of my adolescence

One of the biggest regret of my life. I would have liked seeing Pink Floyd on stage in Berlin in 1990.
This live of " Another Brick In The Wall " is really exceptional.

Pink Floyd helped me to grow up. I was a teenager and I tried to assert myself. When I listened to Pink Floyd, I had the feeling to be an important person.

The expression in the eyes is the reflection of the soul !

Bill appears without make-up today. And I find his look even more beautiful . His eyes express who he is. Without make-up, he is so more true.
As said it a friend in a comment on this blog: " the expression in the eyes is the reflection of the soul ". It is so true. In his eyes I read all what I love.

In any case, he looks happy. It makes me happy too! Even if I miss him a lot. With his brother, they succeed finally to live in Los Angeles. It 's the main part!

Today at home - Work on my website

I stayed at home today. I worked all day long on my website (http://www.bill-kaulitz.fr) and mainly on the photo gallery. I have to classify on the host of the gallery 40 000 photos in 1078 albums. A big work. But I have to do it. I want that this gallery is perfect. (http:// www.gallery.bill-kaulitz.fr)

I also have to work the biographies of the site, and especially the biography of Bill, that I would want perfect too. I 'll work on Bill's biography in Germany when I 'll go on December, the week on December 12th. I need to feel the atmosphere where he grew to feel me closer to his story. Maybe Magdeburg? I don't still know. Anyway if I go to Magdeburg, I 'll have nothing else to do that to write Bill's biography. In any case on December 15th I 'll be in Düsseldorf for the concert of Nena.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't really enough time to make all I want to make on my site. I would also like to change it completely. I have a lot of idea, but not enough time.
I 'd like to work my site every day, and I 'd be able to concentrate me on this site that I 'd like perfect also. I 'd like this site is as close as possible to the personality of Bill Kaulitz.
But no! During the day I make the same work, but on the web site of my bank. It 's much less fascinating.

Neues Land

I listen to non-stop this song which is really magnificent. Music is so great! Of Nena! I feel so close to Nena! I don't know why! But this song is magnificent! I 'm trying to play this music on my piano. I really like! A real pleasure!!

Neues Land

Germany seen by France - Lol

Before 2006, in France, our friend Derrick represented Germany.

Marie : " ...... Z ... ZZ ... ZZZZZZZZZ ...... "

" Oh sorry, a little bit tired! "

Since the end of 2006, in France we don't think any more of Derrick as German worth, but of the band Tokio Hotel. Great! This group went through the world by exporting its music but also the image of Germany! I think that Germany has never had so good ambassadors. But I also think that the Germans aren't be enough grateful to the band Tokio Hotel. I would be German, I would be very proud of these boys!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other subject:

Marie : "Why my cat Tom waits for me in the shower every evening? No the question is: Why I called my cat, Tom? "
